Marine Management

Mobiddiction delivers and runs marine safety and fisheries programs for the NSW Government agencies responsible for coastal safety, fisheries and marine conservation. For more than a decade we have designed, built and operated systems for real time beach alerts, marine incident management and public education, alongside NSW Government and delivery partners. SharkSmart, the program that anchors this work, was originally delivered on Mobiconnect and now runs on M4, our multi-tenant platform: a managed core, extended for beach-safety alerts, with modules built for the program. FishSmart and Whale Watch were delivered on earlier platforms, and we continue to run them.

Real Time Safety Information

Our marine management solutions power real time shark detections and beach safety alerts delivered by NSW Government agencies in partnership with Surf Life Saving NSW. Alerts are generated from tagged shark listening stations, drone surveillance, SMART Drumlines, helicopter patrols and authorised field operators. The platform standardises this information and distributes it instantly to mobile apps, smart watches, web maps and official channels so beachgoers receive timely and trusted safety information.

Location Specific Notifications

The SharkSmart and FishSmart programs deliver location specific notifications. Alerts can be targeted to a user’s current location or selected favourite beaches, ensuring information is relevant and actionable. Targeting alerts by location matters on a long coastline, where incidents are highly localised.

Incident Alerts

Marine emergencies require rapid escalation and authoritative communication. Our platforms support emergency alerts such as shark incidents, beach closures and other critical safety notifications. Configurable workflows ensure alerts can be issued quickly by authorised personnel with clear governance and auditability.

Permissions

Marine management involves many organisations and contractor groups with different responsibilities. The platform uses Role Based Access Control (RBAC) to manage who can create, review and publish information. This supports NSW Government staff, SMART Drumline and shark meshing operators, Surf Life Saving NSW, drone surveillance teams and partner organisations, while maintaining clear chains of trust and accountability.

Apps

Mobiddiction designs and supports a suite of marine management apps for both the public and authorised operators. These include SharkSmart phone and watch apps for beach users, the FishSmart app for recreational fishers, and SharkSmart PRO for NSW Government staff, contractors, Surf Life Saving NSW headquarters and members, Surfing NSW and boardrider clubs. SharkSmart PRO and the public SharkSmart apps connect to the one SharkSmart platform, so data, alerting logic and governance stay consistent. FishSmart has its own platform.

Analytics and Reporting

Our marine platforms collect detailed operational and usage data to support reporting, evaluation and continuous improvement while strictly safeguarding user privacy. Public apps avoid unnecessary collection of personally identifying information. All shark detections, incidents and safety related events are securely archived and available for regular and ad hoc reporting.

Cloud Infrastructure

SharkSmart and FishSmart are hosted on Amazon Web Services in Australia. Mobiddiction manages hosting, monitoring, backups and performance optimisation as part of an ongoing managed service. Developed and operated under Mobiddiction’s Information Security Management System, certified to ISO/IEC 27001:2022 by an independent, accredited auditor.

Over a decade in marine programs

Mobiddiction has worked in marine management for more than a decade. SharkSmart has been in continuous use, maintenance and enhancement since 2014 and FishSmart since 2015, and Whale Watch extends the Wild About Whales program we first built for the National Parks and Wildlife Service in 2013.

Long-term operations and support

Marine management platforms require long term operational support. Mobiddiction provides first and second line customer support, App Store and Play Store review management, bug fixes, feature upgrades across mobile apps and backend services, cybersecurity and compliance activities, and ongoing advice on how each program should evolve. We build these programs to run for the long term, and we stay with them.
