Community Shark Bite Kits, an initiative of Bite Aid, puts trauma kits at beaches so that anyone on scene can stop severe bleeding before emergency services arrive. Each kit is a sealed, weatherproof housing with trauma supplies and step-by-step incident cards, and nobody needs medical training to use one.

The kits are community funded. People buy a kit and have it installed at their local beach, or donate towards one. Bite Aid needed one place to sell kits, keep track of every kit once it was installed, and show beachgoers where the nearest one is.

What we delivered

We designed communitysbk.com.au, assembled it on M4 and run it. The site’s content, shop, customer accounts and enquiries all run on M4, using the M4 core as it is.

  • A shop for kits. People buy a kit online, with secure checkout and delivery priced for NSW and interstate.
  • A kit register. Every kit is recorded against the place it is installed, with its own kit code, starting from Bite Aid’s existing spreadsheet of locations.
  • A locations map. More than 300 kits across New South Wales, Queensland, South Australia and Western Australia, on a map and in a list, with the kit code on every marker.
  • Accounts for kit owners. Owners sign in to track their kit, report a problem, request a move or order a replacement.
  • Report an issue. Anyone can report a kit that has been used or damaged, so it can be restocked or repaired.

On the SharkSmart map

Community Shark Bite Kits works alongside SharkSmart, the beach-safety program we run for the NSW Department of Primary Industries and Regional Development (DPIRD). Every deployed kit is shared from M4 into the SharkSmart apps and web app and kept current automatically, so people checking SharkSmart before a swim can also see the kits nearest them.

A kit that Bite Aid installs and records once appears on its own site and in SharkSmart, with nobody entering it twice.

How it comes together on M4

Community Shark Bite Kits uses the M4 core as it is: content for the site, commerce for kits that are posted or installed at a place, locations and field assets for the kit register, and contacts and customer accounts for the people who buy and support the kits. Nothing was crafted only for it.

It is one of the client sites we assemble and run on M4. See how our own sites run on M4.
